Barbarea spring variety "Svetlana"

“Svetlana” spring variety has been created by the researchers of All-Russian Williams Fodder Research Institute together with the researchers of FSBI ARIR.

For different regions of Russia a high yielding spring variety of Barbarea has been produced, combining high yields with high seed quality and resistance to major diseases. Since 2008 it has been included in the State Register of protected varieties and approved for production (RF patent №3863).

Variety pedigree: the variety has been created by individual family-group selection from a heterogeneous population of C-196 (FSBI ARIR).

Botanical characteristics. The height of the plant is 99-117 cm. The stem is light green with no anthocyanin and no pubescence. The waxy coating is strong. The length and width of the cotyledons and leaves are average. The leaf is green with no anthocyanin, the waxy coating is weak, the pubescence on the upper side is average. The development level of the leaf segments is strong. The curve of the leaf is weak. The leaf margin serration is average. The petals are yellow. The flowering time is early. The pod (without the beak) is long. The beak of the pod is long. The seeds are round, their color is yellow-brown. The weight of 1000 seeds is 2.6-3.2 g.

Biological features. The vegetation period is on the average 87 days. The resistance to lodging and seed shattering is above the average.

The susceptibility to powdery mildew is below the average level - at the level of the standard (“Lipchanka” variant), the susceptibility to Alternaria and Fusarium is average, at the level of the standard level. The variety is moderately damaged by cruciferous flea beetles and rape blossom beetle.

Competitiveness. Due to its high yield potential and the quality of its seeds variety “Svetlana” is quite competitive in all 12 regions of Russia.

Main advantages. With high yields, high oil and meal quality, this variety is oriented for mechanical harvesting. The variety is recommended for seeds and animal feed purposes as the main crop as well as an intermediate crop.

In the competitive tests of the fodder conducted by FSBI ARIR (2004-2005) the seed yield of this variety averaged 2.16 t / ha, which exceeded the standard by 0.44 t / ha.

Variety type "00". The content of erucic acid in the oil was on the average 0.11%, the content of glucosinolates in the meal is 0.50% (11.7 mmol / g). The contents of crude fat and protein in the seeds were 41.6% and 22.7%, respectively.

The commercial value of the variety is in its advantage over the standard varieties due to its higher seed yields, its high oil and meal quality, its resistance to major pathogens and its technology of cultivation and harvesting.

“Svetlana” spring variety is able to provide high seed yield and green mass in the regions of the Russian Federation, where spring rape cannot be cultivated.
